European airlines are entering a turbulent summer as soaring jet fuel prices, driven by the ongoing Iran conflict and supply disruptions in the Middle East, force major carriers to reduce flight schedules. With fuel costs rising sharply and supply concerns growing, the aviation industry is facing one of its biggest operational challenges in recent years.
European airlines are cutting thousands of flights during the peak summer travel season as the ongoing Iran war continues to disrupt global energy markets and push jet fuel prices sharply higher.
The soaring cost of aviation fuel has become a major concern for carriers across Europe, where many airlines depend heavily on imported jet fuel from the Middle East. Since the beginning of the U.S. and Israeli-led military conflict involving Iran, jet fuel prices have nearly doubled, putting intense financial pressure on airline operations.
German flag carrier Lufthansa has announced plans to cut around 20,000 flights from its schedule through the fall season in an effort to control rising fuel expenses. Industry analysts say this is one of the largest single flight reductions seen in Europe in recent years.
Rico Luman, Senior Economist at ING Research based in Amsterdam, described the move as a significant warning sign for the wider aviation sector. According to him, Lufthansa’s decision may be only the beginning, with more European airlines likely to announce similar schedule reductions if fuel prices remain elevated.
He noted that if the geopolitical conflict continues and energy costs stay high, airlines across the continent may be forced to take stronger cost-cutting measures, including reducing flight frequency, suspending less profitable routes, and increasing ticket prices.
Other major European carriers such as KLM and Scandinavian Airlines have also started adjusting their schedules due to the fuel crisis, although their reductions are currently smaller compared to Lufthansa’s large-scale cuts.
Energy market experts warn that the biggest risk remains the possible long-term disruption of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route located near Iran. This narrow waterway is one of the world’s most important oil and fuel transport channels, and any prolonged closure could create severe shortages of jet fuel across Europe.
Fatih Birol, head of the International Energy Agency, recently described the situation as one of the most serious energy security threats Europe has ever faced.
He explained that Europe usually receives a significant share of its aviation fuel from Middle Eastern refineries, but those supplies have now dropped dramatically. According to him, Europe is working urgently to replace those lost imports by sourcing additional fuel shipments from the United States and Nigeria.
Birol had earlier warned that Europe may have only around six weeks of remaining jet fuel reserves if supply disruptions continue. He also stated that if the Strait of Hormuz remains affected, governments and regulators may need to consider temporary travel reduction measures to preserve fuel supplies.
The International Air Transport Association (IATA), which represents more than 360 airlines worldwide, has also warned about potential fuel shortages and increased operational risks for airlines across Europe.
Travel demand remains strong during the summer holiday season, but rising fuel costs are creating uncertainty for both airlines and passengers. Experts say travelers may soon face higher airfares, limited route availability, and more frequent schedule changes as airlines attempt to manage the financial impact of the crisis.
The aviation industry is now closely watching developments in the Middle East, as the duration of the conflict and the stability of fuel supply routes will determine how severe the disruption becomes for global air travel in the months ahead.
